In order to assign DOIs to the different kinds of objects supported by the ONIX DOI Metadata Schema, you have to compile the related metadata.
DOI can be assigned to an object at work level or manifestation level:

Work Level
The object is described in its intangible form, as an abstraction, therefore, the form of publication here is not relevant. The DOI identifies the object regardless of the different forms in which it is published.
Through this document, you can define the metadata associated to a monograph, that is a publication that doesn't make part of a series.

Manifestation Level
the object is described and identified as a product, thus described in its tangible form. The DOI identifies an object in a certain publication form (eg. printed book or a digital file, either a pdf file or an html page), therefore if the object exists in more than one form, each form will have a different DOI.
